The bright fall leaves, in southern Ontario

at least, have given us their autumn best. It’s

nothing short of stunning. We’re warned

it won’t last.

What’s the hint?  A bright red leaf pulled free

from its branch moments ago tells me so as

it flutters to the to the ground beside me.

Writer’s comment: More leaves will follow

in the coming days, weeks. Soak it up. This

kaleidoscope of  colors won’t last forever.

We all have some things we can’t do well. One of them

for me is carpentry. Sawing a line that needs a straight edge

never goes well.

Maybe I need glasses. I read mostly without them

so that can’t be it. Put it down to lack of concentration?

We have a bedroom with a carpet in it. It’s been there

almost  since the house was built. Or close to it.

My better half put her foot down. A new carpet

Or… she didn’t say what.

We know a couple of carpenters who have done

good work for us in the past. They came over, looked

at the old carpet, frowned; whispered to each other

and nodded.

Writer’s comment: It took them a full day, leaving

the two of us grinning at each other. Why didn’t we

have it done well before now?

That’s a good question.
