The house is empty during the day. Except

for me in my office down the corridor . That’s

not quite true. Rebelle is with me.

The 5-year-old German Shepherd hangs

around spending a portion of her day on

the cedar deck. Or out in the woods.

She nudges my office door open with her snout,

her tail wagging as if to say, “Are you okay?”

I nod and she disappears. I couldn’t count to ten

before she’s back, tilting her head tilted to one side

looking at me with those those big brown eyes.

“Are you sure?” I’ll swear she’s asking me.

I take her big head in both hands and hug her.

“Yes I’m fine, “I tell her.

Writer’s comment: It amazes me how close

Rebelle is to both of us. Roe drives up the steep ,

unpaved driveway when coming home from work.

She’s not even out of the car when the dog charges

out of the solarium to bound down to the car

to welcome her home. Not only is she wagging

her long, heavy tail but her whole furry body as well.
